Action on a parking lot (2014)
At dusk on a semi-deserted parking lot; a state of flux, a time and space of transition. A broom, a mob and a bucket with water create a circle that appears deep black from one side, and emits shining reflections from the other. Two human beings move in this arena and place stones along its edge, measuring the distance by using their own bodies. As fleeting this circle is, as ancient are the stones; together they create a tense field of hightened awareness.
The two figures immerse themselves in the dynamics of the situation, entering a silent dialogue with what they encounter, within themselves as well as 'out there'. Forces, impressions, snippets of fleeting sensations become articulated and manifested in written word, replaced at times when the dynamics of the situation change. For about ten minutes, everything becomes a participant in this happening by observing and being observed. And then there comes a moment when it is over; proceeding would destroy what has been created. A portal? A brief look into each other's eyes is enough to agree. The two bodies silently leave the arena, opening it up for the surrounding audience-participants to explore. Over the next few days, fading remains speak of something that happened and that might come to life again. |
